Class I stockings and phlebitis

Phlebitis is caused by twisted and enlarged veins near the surface of the skin. It is a condition that occurs most often in the feet and ankles. It is usually not serious, but sometimes it can lead to other problems. Normally, the valves in your veins keep blood flowing from your legs to your heart. When these valves don’t work properly blood pools in your legs and builds up pressure.

Symptoms of phlebitis

Varicose veins from phlebitis are dark blue in color and accompanied by swelling in the affected area. Mild phlebitis symptoms may include:

  • “Burning” sensation in the legs combined with pain and fatigue. Symptoms may be more severe after prolonged standing.
  • Swelling in the feet and ankles.
  • Itching over the vein.

Varicose veins from varicose veins are common and usually not a sign of a serious problem. However, in some cases, phlebitis can be a sign of venous thrombosis.

Ways to treat phlebitis

  • Wear compression socks.
  • When sitting prop your feet up.
  • Avoid long periods of standing and try to walk at regular intervals even for 1-2 minutes.
  • Exercise regularly
