DRY SKIN – USEFUL INFORMATION

What is dry skin?

It is more or less a matter of degree.

We may have healthy skin, in good condition, but by nature dry.

Simply dry skin, we simply say that it shows dryness.

Some of you have naturally drier skin than others and this dryness increases with age. The dry cold in winter, but also the air and the sun are factors that favor the appearance of dryness. We also know the harmful role for our skin of some hygiene and cleansing products that contain surfactants with very strong cleansing and irritating action.

An abnormal skin with thickening of the skin, constant peeling and the presence of large scales characterizes the ichthyosis.

In eczema, and especially in atopic dermatitis, the skin is pale and dry.

In rare cases, nutritional deficiencies (in vitamins, magnesium or fatty acids) can worsen skin dryness.

Finally, many skin conditions require treatments that dry out the skin (for example: acne).

Your doctor’s advice

Dry skin needs careful analysis. We must first rule out rare forms of fish and treat atopic dermatitis in a timely manner.

If it is an individual skin problem, you can correct it by removing aggressive cleansers and using moisturizer.

If this is another case, your dermatologist will recommend a special treatment and specialized moisturizers.

Moisturizers

Not all moisturizers have the same mechanism of action. At the level of active ingredients, we distinguish three main mechanisms of skin hydration:

The impermeability mechanism is usually with very fatty products, for example based on Vaseline, which form an impermeable film on the skin and help retain water inside the stratum corneum.

The emollient mechanism with compositions based on glycerin, urea or lactic acid that provide the skin with components of normal hydration.

The normal mechanism with compositions containing fatty acids, sterols or tiles that provide the skin with lipids that resemble the lipids of the stratum corneum of the skin, so as to compensate for the deficiencies.

Researchers who develop these products tend to combine many active ingredients to optimize their mechanism of action.

Your dermatologist will help you choose the product or range of products that are most suitable for your problem.

In all cases, remember that regular use is essential: moisturizers should be applied daily to maintain their effectiveness.
