Useful information about the cane

You may find it helpful to use a cane if you have a slight problem with balance or instability, some weakness in your leg or torso, if you suffer from an injury, or some pain. If you are elderly, a cane can help you to continue living independently. In the beginning, everything we do may seem difficult. But with a few tips and some practice, you will gain confidence and learn to use your walking aids safely.

Determining the appropriate position for the cane. The top of your cane should reach your wrist when standing. Your elbow should bend slightly when holding the cane in your hand. Hold the cane with the hand on the opposite side from the one that needs support.

Walking. When walking, your cane and injured leg should be swinging and touching the ground at the same time. To get started, place your cane just in front of your foot and walk with your injured foot. Complete the step with your ΄΄good΄΄ foot.

Stairs. To climb the stairs, grab the railing (if possible) and lean on your good leg first, with your cane in your hand opposite the injured leg. Then lift the injured leg. To go down the stairs, put your cane first on the ladder, then your injured leg and finally your “good” leg, which carries your body weight.

Design the space: Remove carpets, electrical cables, avoid wet floors, and anything else that might cause you to fall.
